Celebrating their twenty-fifth year of making music independently without the support of a major record label, Cris Williamson and Tret Fure have released Radio Quiet, their second album on their own Wolf Moon Records.

Williamson, who helped open the door for women in popular music with her pivotal The Changer and the Changed in 1975, has had a substantial impact on the music industry as a co-founder of Olivia Records, likely the first label run

entirely by women, and later as a gifted singer and songwriter who has remained fiercely independent.

Fure, along with her writing and performing career, has made her mark as one of the first women to be accepted on the technical side of the music world, as a recording engineer.

Radio Quiet continues the Williamson and Fure tradition of powerful story telling delivered through tender, upbeat vocal performances. "On the Line" and "Nighthawks" feature Williamson and Fure painting pictures, exploring the lives of families and strangers. Other songs emerge more cryptically including title track "Radio Quiet" and

"Keeper of the Light." The title track offers an interesting lyric and decent dynamics, but loses a step with an all-too-literal "call waiting" section.

Both Williamson and Fure take the lead individually elsewhere on the album. Fure's "Choices," a statement about social injustice, surfaces with a sparse arrangement, backed only by guitars.

More playful, "Tomboy Girl" will become a crowd favorite, should Fure decide to play it live. Williamson heads for the country with "The John Deere Song" and also turns in an outstanding performance on "Liferaft" where she holds back a bit vocally, gaining strength from a subtlety usually lost in her more extreme vocal perfor-

mances.

The CD adds another trademark tender love song to the

with "Everyone to Me." Though

Fure takes the lead vocal, Williamson sings background for a definitive statement from two women who have been partners in music and life for 18 years.

Williamson and Fure will make two stops in Ohio in May. On May 9, the duo will be in Dayton at the Canal Street Tavern. Call 937461-9343 for ticket information. Clevelanders can catch the pair on May 14 at the Brick Alley Theater. Call 216-432-3655 for tickets.

Those who miss Williamson and Fure during this leg of their tour can see them perform on June 17 at the National Women's Music Festival in Muncie, Indiana. Tickets for that event can be obtained by calling 317-927-9355. ♡
